If you’ve been living for that “Sex and the City” vibe — the cosmos, the drama, the rooftop bars — but lately feel like the city has lost its sparkle, you’re not alone. DC is great and all, but sometimes you just want to shake things up without fighting for parking or elbowing your way through a crowded bar. Here are five classic happy hour spots outside of DC that’ll make you rethink your go-to routines, especially if you’re not to keen on running into familiar people too often.
1. Vacation – Columbia, MD
This tropical-inspired bar brings the vacation vibes right to you. With fun a late night happy hour menu, lively music, and an atmosphere that feels like a getaway, it’s the perfect spot to vibe out. Try their signature frozen cocktails and pair them with their island-themed small plates. It’s giving summer vacation energy year-round.
2. Barrel & Bushel – Tysons Corner, VA
This spot is perfect if you’re craving a balance of casual and chic. Their outdoor patio is a vibe, especially when the weather’s nice, and the drink specials will have you staying for “just one more.” Pair that with their shareable plates like truffle fries or the crispy Brussels sprouts, and you’ve got yourself a perfect after-work hangout. Bonus: It’s right by Tysons Galleria, so you can sip, shop, and repeat.
3. Blue Sunday Bar & Grill – Bowie, MD
This Bowie favorite is known for its classy yet welcoming vibe. Not going to lie, this is one of my favorite spots right now. Their everyday happy hour features discounted cocktails, wine, and mouthwatering appetizers. From their fresh seafood to the perfectly mixed martinis, this spot is a must-visit friend. In the summer time you can sit outside and enjoy the vibes.
4. Busboys and Poets – Columbia, MD / Hyattsville, MD
For those who love a mix of culture, cocktails, and community, Busboys and Poets is always a low key vibe. Their happy hour includes discounted apps and drinks, but the real treat is the atmosphere. Whether you’re catching up with friends or making new ones, this spot feels like the place to be. Bonus: Their sweet potato hash and turkey burger… very worth breaking your diet for.
5. Yard House – Arundel Mills, MD
If all else fails, Yard House prevails! If you’re looking for variety, Yard House has you covered with an extensive beer list and an equally impressive happy hour menu. They have the sports games on every TV so it’s safe to take your man. From half-price pizzas to discounted sliders and shareable plates, there’s something for everyone. Located right in the Arundel Mills area, it’s the perfect pre-movie or post-shopping spot to wind down with friends.
So, if you’re over the DC scene (or just need a break), these happy hour spots outside the city offer good vibes, great drinks, and a refreshing change of pace. You might not find Carrie Bradshaw-level drama, but who says you can’t create your own big moments closer to home? Cheers to discovering your new favorite spot!
